About John Cox: The Lawyer
John Cox, […]
I have practiced law in Knoxville for more than thirty years, representing people in all walks of life, from all over the country and from all over the world. I have represented both people and businesses, and their owners, either as individual persons or as their agents or as members of boards of directors.
A native of Muncie, Indiana, I graduated from Purdue University in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management. I attended Vanderbilt University Law School, where I was Editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review, graduating in 1976. I passed the New Jersey bar exam in 1978 (not the Tennessee exam).
After law school I practiced law in New York for almost seven years, mostly with Weil, Gotshal & Manges, but for a brief period also as an Assistant District Attorney for New York County (Manhattan) in the Homicide Bureau, before returning to Knoxville.
I was employed for a time at the University of Tennessee and then at a major law firm in Knoxville before going on my own in 1980. I was joined that firm, Cox & McOmish, by Mark McOmish in 1983.
In practice, I have represented as clients an international media company, a major U.S . arms manufacturer, several banks and banks’ holding companies, as well as local companies in a multitude of industries from concrete block manufacturers to a banana distributor to a fiber optics company and dozens of others, as well as serving as general counsel for a number of local law firms.
I have handled all sorts of civil cases, commercial, and personal injury, with a fair number of criminal cases as well. A case involving a Jamaican gunman held in a local jail while awaiting extradition to Florida was reported in Time magazine. Another case involved a blow to the head by a steel beam which was the subject of a 700 page medical bill. A third case involved representation of an army contractor in a case involving a $10 million RAID being claimed by the Army for faulty defendants, these being construction contractors and subcontractors.
I have represented clients in a host of different business disputes and explained corporate governance, real property issues, and business sale purchases.
In criminal law practice, I have handled a variety of drug cases (from meth, to marijuana, to prescription drugs), federal firearms offenses, and other federal crimes, such as bank fraud, as well as state crimes including domestic violence.
I represent clients from all over the country with specific laws in other states as well as in federal court. I have appeared before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Noteworthy Cases and Successes of John Cox
Mr. Cox has built a reputation for success in his legal career, serving as a trial attorney for more than 20 years. While working as a Deputy District Attorney, he honed his trial skills in the area of criminal defense. He has served as an attorney of record in over 200 jury and bench trials as well as probation and parole revocation hearings. He has tried the following types of cases; Child Molestation & Sexual Assault, Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Elder Abuse Battery, Rape, Robbery, Drug Cases, Child Abuse.
Mr. Cox gained headlines for his role in the successful representation of a defendant in State v. Mendez, 159 P.3d 598 (2007) who was facing jail time in a child support case. The State was spending taxpayer dollars on costly jail and prison time rather than considering other alternatives. In a landmark decision by the Nevada Supreme Court, an opinion which is used my many to support changes in child support laws in the State, the Court reversed the contempt order on the ground that Mendez who had sought work multiple times had not willfully violated the order. The supreme Court in Mandez found that forcing a parent to go to jail to pay back child support was tantamount to penalizing poor people who had fallen behind in their support obligations because they were out of work due to no fault of their own.

"Absolutely the best attorney ever. I hired Mr. John Cox on a couple of different occasions. Every time he took care of business and went out of his way (that wasn’t charged for) to help get through the rough moments during my legal issues. He knew what I was going through and was on my side from the start. He has a great attitude and a good heart. Some days I wasn’t the easiest client. So much appreciated!"—Julio S. "I have worked with John Cox for over two decades. When I lived in Los Angeles, his office was conveniently located near my home. At my request, he successfully represented me in two separate lawsuits after I lost my son and then my husband. Needles to say, these were the two most desolate years of my life. His expertise and integrity helped give me what I needed to see me through those dark times. I am most grateful to John for being there when I needed him, and for working so hard on my behalf. He is very professional and he truly cares about his clients. He will fight for you, the law, your family, etc… I have recommended him to others, and will do so again without hesitation. It’s more than an endorsement, it’s a genuine recommendation from someone who has employed him twice in two very different matters. Without John, I’d have been fighting with one arm tied behind my back! Thank you, John!"—Anna M.
